Discover the traditions, rituals and everyday practices of folk magic with Folk Magic: A Beginner's Guide...
Folk magic isn't simply about casting spells or performing rituals. It can be a way of looking at the world, connecting with the people and traditions that came before us, and bringing intention and magic into everyday life.
In Living Folk Magic: Crafting Your Own Magical Life, Mary-Grace Fahrun explores folk magic as a living, adaptable practice rather than something belonging solely to the past.
Folk magic exists in cultures and communities across the world, with traditions shaped by local landscapes, families, beliefs and experiences. Fahrun encourages readers to explore these practices thoughtfully while developing a magical practice that works for their own lives.
At the heart of the book are what Fahrun calls the four pillars of magic:
🧹 Cleansing – removing unwanted or negative energy
💚 Blessing – bringing love, positivity and beneficial energy
🛡️ Protecting – creating magical boundaries and keeping unwanted influences away
⚔️ Defending – actively responding when protection alone isn't enough
Alongside these foundations, the book explores:
🔮 Divination and reading signs and omens
🕯️ Creating and working with altars
🌿 Herbs, plants and magical ingredients
🧿 Charms, amulets and protective practices
🧂 Cleansing and protective rituals
🕯️ Candles, incense and other magical tools
👻 Working with spirits and developing spiritual relationships
🌙 Dreams and dream symbolism
🃏 Cartomancy and other forms of divination
✨ Visualization and setting magical intentions
🧙♀️ Building a personal folk magic practice
🏡 Bringing magic into everyday life
The book also explores ideas around ancestors, spirits, folklore, sympathetic magic and the magical meaning we can find in ordinary objects and experiences. Rather than presenting one rigid system that everyone must follow, Fahrun encourages readers to understand the principles behind folk magic and adapt them thoughtfully to their own circumstances.
This makes Living Folk Magic particularly interesting for anyone who wants to move beyond simply collecting spells and start thinking about how magic can become part of everyday life.
Mary-Grace Fahrun is a folk witch and author whose work focuses particularly on the preservation and practice of Italian folk traditions.
