🎃 A Little Jack O' Lantern History

The tradition of carving lanterns has a long history, particularly in connection with Samhain and Halloween.

Before pumpkins became the familiar Halloween decoration we know today, people in parts of Britain and Ireland carved turnips and other root vegetables into lanterns. These were sometimes used as protective symbols or to ward away unwanted spirits and other supernatural beings.

When the tradition travelled to North America, the plentiful pumpkin became the vegetable of choice — eventually giving us the iconic Jack O' Lantern we recognise today.

So while this coaster is primarily here to look spooky and fabulous, the Jack O' Lantern has a fascinating place within the history and folklore surrounding Halloween.
